A group of architects at ZA Architects in Germany have recently designed some interesting conceptual plans for colonies on Mars.
The colony would be built underground, initially by robots, out of naturally occurring basalt. The structures would be completed by humans upon their arrival to the planet. Using basalt, which is extremely prevalent in Martian bedrock, and robots would help drastically decrease the cost of colonizing Mars. Basalt would also provide an exceedingly stable structure to build on and out of, as well as providing protection from radiation.
